An Online Exploration of the Great Epic of India
A Twelve Week Storytelling Immersion
Beginning Wednesday, January 15th, 5-6 PM EST The Mahabharata is the epic history of an entire people, a vast and mythic universe dreamed out of the land of India and explored by countless storytellers over thousands of years. It is a poetical history of mankind which "nourishes all who hear it." I love this story and am looking forward to telling it again. Each week I will tell a section of the story, accompanied by guitar and drum; we will then explore the deeper levels of the story through discussion and visualization. Recordings of these sessions will be available on a weekly basis to all participants. |

WHY I TELL THIS STORYI tell this story because it moves me. Over twenty years ago when setting out on a week-long canoe trip I found a copy of the Mahabharata at a garage sale, and that book and the story in it have been with me ever since. It is a story which widens my world, enlarging my vision of what a human being can be; it asks crucial questions about right action, good and evil, and the fate of the earth.
I do not claim to represent the culture from which this story originates; I am not a Hindu and have never been to India. Yet I approach this epic not only as a storyteller but as one who has always craved a vision of the larger cosmos of which we are a part. The questions this epic asks have become my questions, and I am excited to be exploring the territory of this epic once again. You can hear excerpts of my version of the Mahabharata here. |
