Magical Disaster Working Group
All of society needs to change. That’s a given. Our ways of living and working, our political systems, and the physical infrastructures around us all need to be transformed. They will be transformed violently if we do not change them consciously.
But these changes are irrelevant if we do not also change the belief system which gave birth to them; the false—because incomplete—understandings of ourselves and the earth which have led to the climate catastrophe. Our task is to change not only our way of living but ourselves. For creative artists alive now, the only relevant question is: “Does the work I am doing change the belief system which brought about climate change?” If it does not, we must ask ourselves if that work is truly necessary. We must ask this question of the orchestra and the independent film, of the alt-rock band and the Shakespeare production. We must be willing to throw everything out; we must also be willing to consider not only what we do but how we do it. Goals of the Group: 1. To educate ourselves. About the crisis, about what has led to it and what possible ways out are; about artistic response to crises of the past. 2. To hold ourselves accountable, that is to regularly re-afirm our committment to changing the belief system at the root of climate change, and to regularly ask ourselves if our work is in fact doing that or not. 3. Possibly, to create new work based on the new relationships and understandings created by the group. |
