Storytelling in Libraries
Storytelling in the libraries brings children, adults and entire families together through the power of imagination. It is a screen-free way to promote literacy, comprehension, and creative thinking. For younger children, stories are a great way to introduce them to characters --such as Gilgamesh, Odysseus, and Sleeping Beauty-- who they will meet later through the written word. Programs for teens and "tweens" not only develop their imaginations but also help them to develop their own storytelling voices, whether through the spoken or the written word.
Libraries serve diverse audiences and so are an ideal place for storytelling, as the presence of listeners of many different ages and backgrounds allows the story to resonate on many different levels at once. This helps open all of us to hidden aspects of the story, revealing possibilities both in the story and in our own lives that we never knew were there.
