The epic
of finn maccool

The Irish and Scottish legends of the hero Finn MacCool and his band of poetic warriors are shot-through with poetry and brilliant trouble, giving us a vision of life lived in constant dialogue with forces unseen.

A house thatched with feathers? A princess cursed to have the head of a pig? A salmon who swims between this world and the next? These are some of the wild images contained in the stories of Finn MacCool and his band of magical, poetry-speaking warriors, offering us mythic medicine for our own changing times.

The Otherworld has a plan and it involves fire, destruction, the loaning of a precious head and unscheduled drinking-bouts by unseen forces. And what happens when us lowly humans step into that rowdy puzzle of impulses?

When the mysterious Fomorians threaten the kingdom of Ireland, Finn reaches not for his spear but for his harp-- and this choice leads to a sequence of surprising visions involving white feathers, stone heads, and the god of the sea.

Though these stories seem to focus on Finn and his band of poetical warriors, the Goddess is a constant presence, liable to show up in the most unlikely of situations-- leaving Finn scrambling for breath at the edge of a mysterious lake.

Once again Finn stumbles into relationship with the Otherworld, encountering the Dark Druid in a meeting that will forever alter both Finn and the Fianna.

When a woman of mud and tangled hair approaches the Fianna from out of the rain, it's only Diarmuid who has the kindness of heart to give her shelter. Little does he know that this simple act will lead him into the depths of the sea...
